Surface Temperature Probes

What Is a Surface Temperature Probe?

Surface temperature probes are temperature sensors that measure the temperature of a surface. This may be on the outside of a pipe, for example – we then speak of a pipe temperature sensor. Alternatively, it can be on a housing or some other flat surface, in which case it is often referred to simply as surface probe. Here you’ll find solutions that are optimized each for a different temperature range.

Inline Temperature Sensor

A surface temperature measurement is basically impossible on plastic tubing. In these cases, we recommend our inline temperature sensor for measuring the flow temperature of liquids in the tube. With its push-to-connect fittings, you can quickly mount it to your system. The sensing element does not protrude into the flowing liquid and thus avoids pressure drops.

pipe mounted temperature sensor and flat surface temperature sensor are good options to measure the temperature on a surface of a pipe or, for instance, a metal sheet

Our ICSkin pipe surface probe

The dedicated shape of the measuring tip ensures excellent heat transfer from the pipe to the probe. The eyelet on the measuring tip allows you to fasten it securely and measure the temperature of the pipe reliably and accurately.

The surface temperature probe also scores with its robust construction. It is overmoulded and, with protection class IP67, defies not only dust and dirt, but also the penetration of water.

Whether as Pt100, Pt1000 or NTC: the surface probe ICSkin is suitable for pipes with diameters between 8 and 20 mm.

Surface probes for high temps

For high temperatures we recommend our surface probes based on MIMS probes. The dedicated adapters guarantee good heat transfer to the sensing element. Whether it’s a pipe surface probe or a contact probe for flat surfaces, you can measure reliably even at high temperatures.

Frequently asked questions about the contact sensor

In the temperature range from -40 to 85 °C we recommend our special pipe surface probe ICSkin. Thanks to its dedicated shape, it fits snugly against the pipe and is easy to attach with a cable tie or clamp. Condensation and freezing cycles cannot harm the sensor (protection class IP67).

Between 85 and 105 °C, our overmoulded cable probe with surface adapter is a good solution.

For higher temperatures, we recommend our mineral-insulated sheath resistance thermometers. They are extremely robust (protection class IP67). Our adapters, optionally for flat surfaces or for pipe surfaces, guarantee good heat transfer and easy installation. You won’t find a more robust contact sensor anywhere!

If you value high accuracy in a comparatively wide temperature range, a Pt100 or a Pt1000 can be a good choice. Depending on the cable length, a three- or four-wire circuit may be necessary. NTCs are more suitable for smaller temperature windows, but are usually cheaper.

With a contact sensor you measure a surface temperature – which comes with certain advantages, but a few disadvantages as well:

On the plus side, you don’t have to open any process connection and you can measure the temperature without affecting the pressure conditions and the flow in a pipe.

But on the other hand you don’t measure the temperature of the medium inside the pipe, but the temperature of the pipe itself. Also, response times are noticeably longer with such measurements than with a threaded probe or a duct probe, for example.

So if you have particularly high requirements for accuracy or response time – and your application allows it – a mineral insulated probe or a threaded sensor can be a good alternative.

Regarding the response time of a sensor, the following rule of thumb applies: If you double the diameter, you quadruple the response time. So choose the diameter wisely!

As with all temperature sensors, the immersion length should be at least 5x the diameter of the sensor to avoid thermal bridges.
