What is a Temperature Transmitter?

A temperature transmitter is a device that amplifies and standardizes the output signal of a temperature sensor. It is typically mounted directly on top of the probe – traditionally in the connection head. We have revolutionized the world of temperature transmitters with the our EVO series: these transmitters are as small as a thumb and come either as a standalone device or directly integrated with a temperature probe. They put out either a 4…20mA or a 0…10V signal.

Compact Temperature Transmitters

The compactness of our transmitters allows installation in even the smallest spaces. The connection is simple with the integrated M12 connectors. For our probes with integrated transmitters, we mould the transmitter itself directly onto a mineral insulated probe. As an added bonus, this combination allows to compensate the probe errors and thus improves accuracy.

The alternative: digital signal

Our temperature sensors and transmitters are also available with Modbus RTU. The digital signal offers you a number of interesting advantages: you can operate several sensors on only one connection line. In addition, you can read out further sensor data beyond the pure measurement data, which is interesting for predictive maintenance, for example.

Frequently asked questions about the temperature transmitter

The output signal of a Pt100 is comparatively weak and therefore sensitive to interference. Amplification or conversion of the signal to a more robust one such as 0-10V or 4-20mA is therefore often recommended, particularly when using long connection cables. Our integrated transmitter also compensates for the measuring error and thus improves the accuracy of your measurement.

Whenever you simply need a standardised output signal. 4-20 mA is an internationally used standard.

Furthermore, in environments with electrical interference, a current loop (4-20 mA) is less sensitive to interference than the weak output signal of the sensor. With our temperature transmitter, you simply convert and amplify the signal. 

Moreover, the 4-20mA signal allows transmission over long distances without distortions. This is very interesting, for example, with resistance thermometers such as the Pt100 and the Pt1000, where the lead wire resistance would otherwise distort the measurement.

Additionally, you can use signals below 4 mA or above 20 mA for error detection and thus detect a sensor defect, for example.

We only recommend a 0-10 V transmitter if a 4-20 mA transmitter can’t be used for some reason. Technically, the voltage signal is inferior to the current loop. For instance, you cannot detect a sensor defect as easily as with a current loop (4-20mA).

Our Pt100 transmitters and Pt1000 transmitters are available in three different designs:

As a pure temperature transmitter with M12 connectors on both sides. This transmitter is compatible with all Pt100 / Pt1000 temperature sensors with M12 connectors. If you need a matching sensor, we recommend our sheathed resistance thermometers.

As screw-in sensor with integrated temperature transmitter. The screw-in sensor is a good choice if you want to insert the sensor into the process using an existing thread. We offer it as a 4-20mA temperature probe and a 0-10V temperature probe.

As a sheathed resistance thermometer with integrated temperature transmitter. The sheathed sensor is a good solution for particularly narrow installation spaces because it is flexible. It is also extremely robust and has a very wide temperature range. We also offer it as a 4-20mA temperature sensor and a 0-10V temperature sensor. Optionally, you can also get our products with a stainless steel jacket.

A sensible alternative to 4-20 mA transmitters are our Modbus transmitters. They enable digital communication with several sensors and devices via a single line (RS-485). In addition, you can read out many other parameters from the sensor via Modbus. Take a look at our Pt100 Modbus temperature sensors now!

Our temperature transmitters are available with either a fixed or a software-configurable temperature range. Our experts will be happy to advise you on your choice!

Generally, you can measure very high temperatures of up to 500 °C with the sheathed sensor with integrated transmitter. However, this requires a sufficiently long probe to ensure that the electronics and the plastic are not subject to those high temperatures. The PCB as the most temperature-sensitive component can withstand temperatures of up to 85 °C.

Regarding the response time of a sensor, the following rule of thumb applies: If you double the diameter, you quadruple the response time. So choose the diameter wisely!

As with all temperature sensors, the immersion length should be at least 5x the diameter of the sensor to avoid thermal bridges.
