Introduction to
INDUSTRIAL TEMPERATURE PROBES
Temperature is one of the most important parameters in the industry and beyond – second only to time.
At Italcoppie, we have been dedicating our work to industrial temperature probes for more than forty years. The two most important characteristics of a temperature sensor are a) the sensing element and b) the design.
The Sensing Element
The most commonly used types of sensing elements in Europe are resistance temperature detectors (RTD) and semiconductor-based thermistors (NTC, PTC). Furthermore, thermocouples typically come into play when temperatures exceed 260 °C. In the United States, on the other hand, thermocouples are much more widespread than RTD for historical reasons (the RTD is basically a European invention). The Design
The requirements for the design of the probe vary with your applications. If you want maximum simplicity, a cable probe can be the right choice. For measuring the temperature inside of pipes, tanks or boilers, threaded probes are a good choice. You can simply screw them directly into a process connection.
If you are looking for an immersion probe or duct sensor to measure in a medium, you have several options:
- You use a threaded probe and screw it directly into a thread (process connection)
- You use a cable probe and insert it into a thermowell
- You use a mineral insulated probe (sheathed sensor) and either fasten it with a compression fitting or insert it into a thermowell
And if it gets hotter than 260 °C or you need high robustness, our mineral insulated probes will likely be the best pick. You will find more detailed information about the designs on the respective page.
